The specified minimum thickness is the absolute minimum below which the disc may not be used anymore. When this value is reached, the brake disc must be replaced, as it will no longer work reliably and safely. This value is determined by the vehicle manufacturers at the design stage.

Factors such as heat dissipation and the relationship between disc, pad and calliper are taken into account, as these must be matched to each other. Worn discs have a lower thermal conductivity. This can cause excessive heat accumulation in the brake system, resulting in serious problems, such as cracking of the disc or vapour bubbles in the brake fluid, which would dangerously impair braking performance.
